Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Festival 2024 - What is it?

Loy Krathong and Yi Peng are both amazing festivals and great reasons to visit Thailand, as there’s so much happening during this time! But do you know the difference and what makes each event unique? They are distinctly different in origin, yet both are deeply symbolic.
Here are a few quick facts that will help you (and me) understand:

  1. Loy Krathong: This festival originated from both Buddhism and Hinduism. It is a thanksgiving celebration for the water goddess Phra Mae Khongkha, as well as a way to apologize and seek forgiveness for polluting the waters. During this event, the lanterns or “floating boats” known as Krathongs are released into the river, symbolizing the letting go of negativity, chasing away bad luck, and releasing past grievances
  2. Yi Peng Festival: Yi Peng is mainly celebrated in Northern Thailand, particularly in Chiang Mai, and has its roots in the Lanna Kingdom, which once ruled the region. (WOW! right?!) The festival takes place on the full moon of the 12th lunar month of the Thai calendar and is deeply connected to Buddhist traditions. The Locals would offer light and prayers for blessings and good fortune. The release of sky lanterns known as khom lo  is a symbolizes the releasing of f bad luck and the shines towards and illuminate a Brighter future and the path towards it.

Fun Facts Recap:

  • Loy Krathong = Floating krathongs in the water (symbolizing letting go of bad luck and purifying the soul).
  • Yi Peng = Floating lanterns in the sky (symbolizing the release of negative energy and the hope for a bright future).

Living in Chiang Mai, It’s the event I can’t wait to be part of!-  witnessing the thousands of paper lanterns soaring into the full moon sky is absolutely exhilarating! If the photos have captured your imagination, just wait until you experience it firsthand! I’ve crafted a vibrant guide to help you dive into the magic of the Yee Peng festival, right in the heart of our enchanting city. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

The city’s unique blend of ancient Lanna culture and vibrant festivities offers an enchanting experience that transports visitors through time. Rooted in the rich history of the Lanna Kingdom, which flourished in northern Thailand from the 13th to the 18th centuries, the region is known for its distinct cultural traditions, art, and architecture. Today, these ancient influences are beautifully woven into modern celebrations, where traditional rituals, music, dance, and art form the heart of the city’s vibrant festivals. Visitors are not just spectators; they are invited to step into a living tapestry of history, where the spirit of the Lanna Kingdom is preserved and celebrated in every lantern-lit street, every temple procession, and every joyous gathering. The result is an unforgettable experience that blends the past and present, offering a glimpse into the cultural soul of this timeless region

Tips for Visitors:

  • Tickets: Some organized lantern releases require tickets, especially at major venues like Mae Jo University. These sell out quickly, so it’s advised to book well in advance.
  • Eco-Friendly Concerns: In recent years, there has been a push towards using more eco-friendly materials for the lanterns, as the mass release of lanterns can impact the environment.

The festival offers a deeply spiritual and visually magical experience, drawing both locals and international visitors every year.  The city’s blend of ancient Lanna culture and festive joy creates a magical experience for anyone lucky enough to attend.
