Chiang Dao: A Peaceful Gem on the Road from Chiang Mai
Chiang Dao is a tiny, charming town that feels like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Nestled along the famous Mae Hong Son Loop, this picturesque destination offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Did you know “Chiang Dao” literally translates to “City of Stars”? With its pristine surroundings and clear night skies, it’s easy to see how it earned this celestial name.
Just a 90-minute drive north of Chiang Mai, the road trip to Chiang Dao is a scenic journey in itself—winding through lush countryside, rolling hills, and local villages. Along the way, you can stop at roadside cafés, hot springs, and stunning viewpoints, making the drive as memorable as the destination.
A 3-Day Road Trip to Chiang Dao: Escaping the City for Mountain Magic
After spending four incredible months in Chiang Mai—making friends, soaking in the culture, and settling into a rhythm—we were ready to explore beyond the city. Thanks to a generous friend, we borrowed a 4-wheel drive and planned a quick 3-day, 2-night road trip to the peaceful mountain town of Chiang Dao.
The drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao was surprisingly easy. Although we hit a few patches of congestion near local markets and traffic-heavy areas, the journey was smooth overall. As we approached Chiang Dao, the road began to gently slope upward—and suddenly, the iconic mountains came into view. Towering and mystical, they seemed to welcome us into the “City of Stars” with open arms.
We created this guide to all things tried and tested; and then recommended by us personally. We did it so you can too! Chiang Dao makes for a really amazing overnight trip from Chiang Mai with to-die-for views, IG-worthy cafes, and surprisingly GOOD delicious food! Go off the beaten path to find amazing less touristy temples, waterfalls and hotsprings with Chopsticks On the Go!
Huai Tueng Thao Sculpture Park
Huai Tueng Thao Sculpture Park
We started our journey from Chiang Mai with a refreshing stop at Huai Tueng Thao Sculpture Park, a hidden gem perfect for those seeking tranquility and outdoor adventure. This expansive park features towering 6-8 meter tall animal sculptures, each intricately designed and perfect for climbing to snap unique, memorable pictures. Our favorite was the giant King Kong, an iconic centerpiece that adds a playful charm to the landscape. The park is nestled beside a serene reservoir, its calm waters reflecting the surrounding natural beauty. Beyond the sculptures, Huai Tueng Thao is a fantastic place to explore, whether you prefer running, cycling along its scenic paths, or simply taking a leisurely walk to soak in the peaceful surroundings. Scattered throughout are cozy restaurants and small huts where visitors can enjoy a leisurely meal. Dining here is an experience in itself, as you sit right by the water, enjoying delicious local dishes with the gentle sounds of nature in the background. With its unique attractions, outdoor opportunities, and tranquil vibe, Huai Tueng Thao is an ideal spot for relaxation and adventure alike.
Akha Ama Living Factory
This beautiful cafe features an open barn concept, creating a charming and spacious vibe. We stopped here for a caffeine boost before continuing our journey north to Chiang Dao. While it’s tucked a bit deeper into the residential area of Mae Rim, it’s definitely worth the detour for its premium quality coffee.
Buathong Waterfall
If you sign up for a tour, this is where they’ll take you! The Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls in Chiang Mai offer an unforgettable experience. Famous for its unique limestone rock formations, the waterfalls let you climb up barefoot without slipping, making it a fun and adventurous spot. hat makes it easy to climb up the Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls is the unique texture of the limestone rocks. The rocks are covered in a natural mineral coating that creates a rough, non-slip surface, allowing you to easily climb barefoot without slipping. This “sticky” quality gives the waterfalls their name and makes the climb safer and more enjoyable compared to typical waterfalls with smooth, slippery surfaces. The entrance is free, and the area is well-maintained. While it can get crowded, the lively atmosphere adds to the charm of this popular destination. Just be cautious in some areas, as they can still be a bit slippery. It’s definitely a must-visit when in Chiang Mai! – We found another sticky waterfall – read more about it on Chopsticksonthego.com
Chiang Dao Caves
The famous Chiang Dao Caves are a must-visit destination! For just a 20-baht entrance fee per person, you can explore this remarkable natural wonder. Since the caves are also a sacred temple, it’s important to dress appropriately out of respect. Instead of opting for the 200-baht guided tour, we chose to explore the illuminated areas of the cave at our own pace. It was a serene and peaceful experience, wandering through the spacious, well-lit chambers and discovering hidden statues tucked away in unexpected corners. Clearly marked walkways make it easy to navigate, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the cave’s beauty without feeling rushed.
Just outside the caves, there’s a picturesque area where you can feed the fish, adding a playful touch to the tranquil atmosphere. The surroundings are incredibly serene and quiet, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty. Tip: Be sure to wear covered shoes as some areas inside the cave can be wet and slippery, ensuring a comfortable and safe visit. Chiang Dao Caves offer a harmonious blend of exploration, spirituality, and tranquility, making it an unforgettable experience
Pornpen 2498 Braised Pork Legs
We came here for the famous braised pork leg and added the white, fluffy steamed buns for dipping—delicious! The braised pork leg was served in a rich, thick gravy that paired perfectly with the spicy chili dip. The flavors were amazing! And fun fact: Apparently, King Rama IX dined here as well! It’s definitely a must-try for pork lovers!
Giant Trees Alley
En route to the famous Chiang Dao Caves, you’ll pass by Giant Trees Alley, a popular spot for both locals and tourists to snap a quick photo. While it’s a lovely stretch of towering trees lining the road, there’s nothing particularly extraordinary about it—just a picturesque scene. If you do stop for photos, be cautious of traffic coming from both directions!

สเต็กเด็กแนว Steak Dekneaw
We’re totally in love with this awesome little spot! The owner and staff are super friendly, always serving with a big smile and great vibes. The food? Amazing—huge portions and top-quality all the way. Definitely try the pork steaks, they’re perfectly seasoned and so tasty. Plus, the place is set under the mountains, making it the perfect chill spot to enjoy a meal. This is our Favorite Restaurant in Chiang Dao (and maybe even Chiang Mai) A must visit here.
Wat Tham Pakpiang
Wat Tham Pakpiang is a great stop right after lunch at สเต็กเด็กแนว Steak Dekneaw, as it’s literally just next door! We stumbled upon this temple and instantly fell in love with it. What makes it unique is its caves! The first cave, Yanawuttho Cave, is accessible via a ladder that leads up through a small opening. It’s a cozy cave with some statues inside, and the cool atmosphere makes it even more special. As we ventured deeper into the temple grounds, we found another larger cave, accessible by stairs leading downwards. This cave has two main chambers, each with statues. The temple has several areas to explore, and it was wonderfully quiet when we visited—no tourists around, which made it even more peaceful.
Wat Tham Pha Plong
The most uplifting temple visit ever! Located atop a hill, it greets you with a climb of 500 stairs. Along the way, multiple signs featuring Buddhist phrases offer thoughtful reflections, making the ascent feel meaningful. Before you know it, you reach the top without even realizing how many steps you’ve taken! At the bottom, there’s a sign inviting visitors to help carry any provisions from the table to the monastery kitchen, though it’s completely optional. Additionally, you’ll find an invitation to stay overnight for meditation, offering a peaceful opportunity to immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere. When we visited on a weekday, it was wonderfully quiet and peaceful.
The Wes Village Chiang Dao
We stayed at The Wes Village during our trip to Chiang Dao, and honestly, it was such a vibe. We booked one of their yurts, and it felt like the perfect mix of comfort and nature—super cozy with a glamping feel, but still tucked right into the peaceful landscape.
The view of Chiang Dao mountain was right at our doorstep. Like, you literally wake up, unzip the yurt, and boom—mountain magic. At night, the sky was filled with stars (makes sense why they call it the “City of Stars”), and the whole place just felt so calm.
They have a few cats on the property—so sweet and curious—and a couple of friendly dogs too. One evening during sunset, we saw a horse and trainer out in the field, and it made everything feel extra dreamy.
Highly recommend if you’re into peaceful stays, mountain views, and cute animals.
Sri Sangwan Waterfall
This Sticky Waterfall far from the usual crowded one, is a hidden gem within Pha Daeng National Park, offering a peaceful escape. There’s a 100 baht entrance fee per person, which also gives you access to the nearby Pong Arng Hot Spring, so be sure to keep your ticket. The park offers cabins and bungalows for overnight stays, ranging from 600 to 2500 baht. Additionally, tent rentals are available for just 225 baht per night. For a cozy break, there’s a small cafe by the waterfalls serving basic coffee and snacks. The area is perfect for a picnic, with picnic mats available for rent at the cafe for only 20 baht. When we visited, the place was quiet, and we had the chance to climb the sticky falls multiple times without any crowds—perfect for a relaxing experience!

Pong Arng Hot Spring
We stopped at Pong Arng Hot Spring after visiting the Sri Sangwan Waterfall, just a few minutes’ drive away. The entrance fee is included in the same Pha Daeng National Park ticket, so you only pay once to access both. The site offers basic amenities, including changing rooms and showers. The hot spring features a variety of natural hot pools, where visitors can soak in warm waters believed to have healing properties due to their mineral content. The temperature of the pools varies, so you can choose your preferred level of warmth for a relaxing experience. Known for its therapeutic waters and peaceful, scenic setting surrounded by lush forests, it provides a tranquil atmosphere. When we visited, there were only a handful of people, making it an incredibly peaceful and relaxing experience. We also noticed some campervans and tents in the area, with campers ready to spend the night in the national park (though we didn’t check the costs).
좋은하루เกาหลีคาเฟ่Goodday cafe’@Chiangdao
We ate here twice because it was that good! The owners are Korean and Thai, and they speak English too, so communication was super easy. The star of the show is definitely the Korean Fried Chicken—it’s hands down the best we’ve had in Asia (outside of Korea). The chicken is top-quality, cooked perfectly in a crispy batter, and coated in a deliciously sticky sauce. It’s served hot, crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside! The JJM (Korean-style stir-fried noodles) was also incredibly tasty, as was the bone soup—both are a must-try! Make sure to save some space in your tummy for a truly satisfying meal here!

Day Drinker’s Collective
Day Drinkers Collective: Possibly the coolest spot (and the coolest couple behind it) in all of Chiang Dao! We grabbed a bottle of mead roselle for our glamping later that evening. When we stopped by, they were in the process of building their new tasting room and event space, so it’s definitely worth checking out. Be sure to follow them on Instagram @daydrinker.collective for updates on their availability and events!

Bhagava Cafe & Cuisine
Super convenient, located right by the main road, making it hard to miss with its beautifully designed building. The desserts here are not only visually stunning but also delicious! The stylish interior offers plenty of photo-worthy moments, perfect for capturing those Instagram stories!
Atmosphere resort & cafe chiang dao
This cafe is located on the same side of the road as Doi Luang Chiang Dao, making it a must-stop spot. The seating area is mostly outdoors with “camping style” tables and low chairs, creating a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great place to learn and practice new photo poses while people-watching. The cafe is incredibly Instagrammable, perfect for capturing stunning shots. We had the latte during our visit, but didn’t try the food or desserts.

Microkosmos Craft Beer & Burger Bar
A great selection of beers on tap, along with an impressive range of canned and bottled beers from all over the world. The Belgian fries were delicious, and the Wild Boar Burger we tried was tasty as well. The service was decent—nothing exceptional or particularly friendly. But hey, the beer was nice and cold! (Guess you could say the service was as “chilled” as my beer!)
Is Chiang Dao worth it?
We escaped the Chiang Mai city buzz for a quick 3-day trip to the mountains of Chiang Dao—and honestly, it was exactly what we needed. From chilled-out cafés and sticky waterfalls to peaceful temples and glamping under the stars, this little town totally surprised us. We’re sharing all our favorite spots—from where we stayed, what we ate (so much good food!), and the hidden gems we stumbled upon. If you’re craving mountain views, quiet vibes, and a bit of adventure, Chiang Dao might just be your perfect getaway too.

A Hidden Spot – Chiang Dao Hot Springs
If you’ve made it this far, here’s a little hidden gem just for you. Tucked just outside the Nature Reserve is a free hot spring that hardly anyone talks about. No entry fee, no crowds—just a handful of locals and maybe a long-term traveler or two.
We showed up around 9pm and had the place almost entirely to ourselves. The water in the tubs is hot and super relaxing, while the nearby creek is icy cold—perfect for a refreshing dip between soaks. There’s only a faint hint of sulfur, nothing too strong, and the best part? If the sky’s clear, you can lie back and stargaze through the trees. Definitely recommend going at night for the peaceful vibes and that little touch of magic.
